OK, I fee like an idiot asking this question because I am pretty sure it has been answered before but it 3:30am and I ready to go to bed. I have tried to install SQL Server 2005 Express and everything goes well UNTIL it tries to install the SQL Server Databases Services and the Workstation Components, Books Online, and Development Tools. I am running Vista. (damn vista)
What's the error message?
Did you check SQL 2005 installer logs?
I suggest you uninstall SQL 2005 and try installing SQL 2008 Express on Vista.
It's a slightly fatter download but should be more compatible with Vista (not that I have tried it, mind you).
