No dialog box to select media type on drag and drop

When I select files and drag and drop into media editor I do not get the option to select the type of file - everything is SONG by default. I have tried for several hours now but cannot work out how to change this. Any help gratefully received

From what you explained, I understand you are able to drag and drop audio files and that they are created in the system as media files of type "SONG".
So your issue is not being able to change the media type.
To change the media type, simply select another type from the drop down combo box next to the label "Type:" which is located above the "Special Properties" group of items.
